Message from the CEO

It is one thing to agree with the notion that most of our Nigerian Youth lack the professionalism required within the workforce or in various industries, and are therefore unemployable. It is another thing to teach them.

When I set-up the charity nine years ago, I imagined it would be extremely easy to create and build corporate partnerships in Nigeria, I was wrong. Two years later, I sent an email to Transcorp Hilton hoping we could partner with them but did not receive a response, so I went there. Met with Mr. Shola Adeyemo and he said “you have two minutes”, two minutes and seven years later we have been able to make a significant impact by transforming African lives through multiple projects.

Growing up in the U.K, I was prepared for the world through an unpaid work experience opportunity at a law firm where I was able to experience how the professional world works at age sixteen (16). This provided me with the insight and skills required to start work, thereby enabling me to build a strong work ethic very early in life. When I spoke with Mr. Shola about replicating this at the Hilton hotel he said “sure, this fits into our focus on empowering the youth in Nigeria”.

Our partnership with Transcorp Hilton Abuja has brought us closer to our goal of redefining what charity means in Africa, starting with Nigeria. Partnering with organizations who value their corporate social responsibilities translates to us assisting, caring and empowering more African lives.

The video below illustrates how the type of work experience opportunity ACE Charity created in partnership with the Hilton is helping our Nigerian youth to thrive professionally and holistically.

Kiki James.

The first half of the year has been exciting for us to say the least. One of our key highlights was our Careers@Hilton programme, and it was bigger than ever. In partnership with Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, we run this education and training/economic empowerment programme to enable young unemployed Nigerians from various backgrounds gain employable skills as well as tools for personal growth. Careers@Hilton has been running for seven (7) years and has positively impacted hundreds of youths.
This year, Transcorp Hilton opened its doors for four (4) weeks to 45 young interns from ages 22-30, giving them first-hand experience of what it takes to work in a leading multinational hospitality company. The interns were posted to various departments of the Hilton such as Human Resources (HR), Kitchen, PR and Marketing, Sales, Housekeeping etc and were provided daily free lunch transportation as well as free certification on various online courses at the Hilton Worldwide University. It was integral for us to aid in their professional and personal development, every morning, the interns had one-hour interactive sessions and presentations from the ACE Team as well as successful professionals from various disciplines who shared their uncut personal success story and success tips.

After four (4) eventful weeks, the interns had a vibrant graduation ceremony to celebrate the successful completion of their programme. During the course of the internship, each intern was assessed by various indicators and the top three interns were: Chinonso Onyebuchi who was awarded the most outstanding intern, followed by Makata Promise Ogechi and Ifeoluwa Omotayo Anwo-Ade! A massive congratulations to them for an excellent display of work ethics.

A massive thank you to Transcorp Hilton for their support of this programme year after year which made Careers@Hilton another success!  We cannot thank all the speakers enough for volunteering their time and sharing a wealth of knowledge with the younger generation. Congratulations to all our interns, we cannot wait to see you actualise all that you desire to be, professionally and personally![/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_custom_heading text=”HILTON CENTENARY CELEBRATION – TOUCHING 1OO LIVES AND MORE” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:center”][image_with_animation image_url=”16598″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][vc_row_inner column_margin=”default” text_align=”left”][vc_column_inner column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

Our very dear partners, Hilton Hotels are celebrating 100 years of service. They truly have the heart for hospitality and as part of their Travel with Purpose initiative, a global corporate responsibility commitment to provide shared value to their business and communities where they are located around the world, they have partnered with and supported us on our journey to redefine what charity means in Africa, starting with Nigeria.

In celebration of this milestone, the Transcorp Hilton team in partnership with ACE Charity gave one hundred (100) #SchoolInABag with essential school suppliess to school children in Shape village. The children were unsurprisignly elated as during our previous visits to the school, most of them used polythene bags to carry their books while others had worn out bags.

In addition, they also empowered six (6) women from Shape with 100 bars of soap which are made from soap pieces collected from Transcorp Hilton; scraped, sanitized, flavored, colored and molded into new exotic soap bars of scented soaps lovingly upcycled by ACE Charity. The women were given the soaps at no cost and thus are able to sell them and earn some income which they can channel into another business, or use to purchase more soaps for sale at heavily subsidised rates.

Thank you to Hilton for planting the brightest smiles on the faces of the children, women and men in Shape village. We are honoured to have been a part of this outreach.

The International Day of the African Child is celebrated yearly on the 16th of June. The importance of this day cannot be overemphasized and the theme this year is “Humanitarian Action in Africa: Children’s Rights First”. Humanitarian crises undoubtedly have far reaching consequences for children one of which includes hindering access to quality education.
At ACE Charity, our main focus is Education and Training because we understand the need for improvement of the educational system in Africa, particularly Nigeria. Our Learning Resource Centres set a strong foundation to equip children in public primary schools in the North-East with Literacy, Numeracy and ICT skills. Beyond this, we also provide school children with school bags that contain essential school supplies to make learning fun and ease the cost of education on parents.

Thank you to everyone who donated towards our #SchoolInABag Campaign in May- YOU ROCK! Because of you, we were able to raise enough funds to purchase school bags for pupils in primary 5 and 6 in this government primary school. Massive thank you to Transcorp Hilton, Abuja and Jabi Lake for providing the spaces used for the campaign.
