Meet Mukhtar Bashir.
He has missed school for five months, he has been stuck at home, with his siblings in a small, rural community in Borno State. During his free time, he loves to play football with his friends. On most days though, he spends his time working in his father’s small provision store, with his father’s radio as company. In May, while listening to Peace FM 91.1 in his father’s shop, he heard as teachers taught core subjects; Maths, English and Science in Hausa. Mukhtar was excited at the opportunity to learn and since then, every Wednesday, he tunes in to listen to the secondary school sessions of ACE Radio School, while seated on a wooden bench, with a notebook and a pen to take notes.
Mukhtar has come to love the ACE Radio School Maths teacher, Mallam Mukhtar. “When he teaches, he said, “I understand what he is saying immediately and I also like his voice. He teaches the subject I love very well”. Since listening to ACE Radio School, Mukhtar, a JSS3 student has come to understand how to solve algebraic expressions and learnt about Speed, Velocity and Acceleration; topics which were difficult for him to understand before ACE Radio School.
Thankfully, his parents have been very supportive. When it is time to listen to ACE Radio School, they let him stop whatever he is doing to focus on learning, and then ask him to tell them what he has learnt.
At 15, Mukhtar already knows he wants to be an Accountant when he grows up. This is why he loves maths so much. ACE Radio School has enabled him to enjoy and comprehend topics in Mathematics he used to find difficult, but are relevant for him to become a successful accountant.
